Robertson Davies was a Canadian novelist and playwright whose Salterton, Deptford, and Cornish trilogies placed mystery at the heart of serious literary fiction. The Deptford Trilogy, beginning with Fifth Business, uses Gothic and psychological elements within a literary framework. He was one of the most significant Canadian novelists of the 20th century.
