Robin Cook is an American ophthalmologist and novelist who essentially created the medical thriller genre with Coma, whose terrifying premise of patients being deliberately kept comatose to harvest organs tapped deep anxieties about medicine. His subsequent medical thrillers have consistently been bestsellers. He is considered the godfather of the medical thriller.
