Russell Thorndike was a British actor and author who created Dr Syn, a country vicar who was secretly a pirate known as the Scarecrow operating smugglers' networks on the Romney Marsh. His adventure novels were enormously popular and the character has been repeatedly adapted for film and television. He wrote nine novels in the series.
