Sheridan Le Fanu was the leading writer of Victorian ghost stories and psychological horror, who influenced Bram Stoker and virtually every subsequent Gothic writer. Uncle Silas is one of the finest Gothic novels in English, and his vampire novella Carmilla predated and influenced Dracula. His ability to generate dread through atmosphere and psychology has never been surpassed in Victorian horror.
