William Hjortsberg was an American novelist best known for Falling Angel, a brilliantly conceived supernatural detective novel set in 1950s New York in which private detective Harry Angel investigates a missing singer with increasingly diabolical results. The novel was filmed as Angel Heart. He was a major figure in the literary supernatural thriller.
