Edgar Rice Burroughs created two of the most enduring pulp fiction characters of the twentieth century: Tarzan of the Apes and John Carter of Mars. His planetary romances and adventure stories defined the swashbuckling heroic tradition in science fiction and fantasy. His prolific output inspired generations of writers including Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke.
