Larry McMurtry was one of the greatest American novelists, whose Lonesome Dove is widely considered the finest Western novel ever written, a sweeping epic of the last cattle drive that won the Pulitzer Prize. His Thalia, Texas trilogy and his Hollywood novels demonstrated his range. He received the Academy Award for Brokeback Mountain screenplay.
